Mr. Mohammad Maqsood, who runs the specialist knee and sport injury clinic at Lincoln county Hospital and John Copeland hospital Gainsborough, Maqsood said: “Many of these improved and modified new ways of treating knee complaints have improved the care that can be provided for patients, speeded up recovery times and used advanced new technologies.

“This clinic has helped us to modify the treatments we can make available for the benefit of patients. We are now looking to set up pre-operative assessment and rehabilitation for certain procedures and looking to carry out more procedures as day cases to improve the patient experience more pleasant and reduce the stay in the hospital.”
The Boston clinics are also run at Johnsn Community Hosaptial in Spalding, set up by Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Dipak Raj.
He said: “This year we have set up a complex knee clinic. Any patients who has joint arthroplasty and having problems can be seen in this complex knee clinic.

“Some of these techniques are very advanced. This clinic has significantly helped the patients of South Lincolnshire. We keep a close eye on all of our patients. The patients are requested to fill in satisfaction and outcome questionnaires on a regular basis to make sure that they are happy. We have learnt a lot from these feedback questionnaires. It greatly helps in developing our service to meet the patients demand.”

Notes to editors

Articular cartilage (covering cartilage) repair is a procedure to restore the surface of the joint’s cartilage. It is targeted at patients who suffer from articular cartilage damage and provides pain relief while at the same time slowing down the progression of damage or considerably delaying knee replacement surgery.

Meniscal cartilage (cushion cartilage) repair is a procedure to repair a tear in the meniscus (a C-shaped piece of cartilage in the knee joint that offers lubrication and nutrition to the joint).

Cruciate ligament reconstruction is a surgical tissue graft replacement of the anterior cruciate ligament, located in the knee, to restore its function after anterior cruciate ligament injury.
Shoulder stabilisation is surgery to secure the joint in position.

Medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) repair is surgery to prevent recurrent dislocation of the kneecap. The aim of the operation is to rebuild the torn Medial patello-femoral ligament.
